I'm portuguese and i share your love for the 4L, I'm looking to buy 4L in portugal and i want to know which is the best motor of the 4L, the most reliable one, the 1108cc or the 956cc. Sorry for writing in english but i don't understand your language and i think it would be dificult for you to understand portuguese...
Thanks
Thanks
It's not only about the engine, but also about the luxury you want. The GTL, with 1108cc engine is the most "luxurious" R4. All engine's are reliable, but the 1108cc engine has the most power offcourse. The GTL also has discbrakes on the front. Personaly, I prefer the GTL, but that's something personal, you'll have to decide yourself.

Reliability of the motors i know they are, i had a GTL and a L and both are really good, in terms of power of course the 1108 is better but from your experience in the forum which motor lasts longer.
Another thing, about prices, what is the avarage price of a 4L or GTL from 88 or 89 in there and in average condition. In Portugal the demand for this car is high so the price is high, about 1000€.

Fot a really good GTL from the late '70's or early '80's Prices are 2000 euro's and higher. This can go up to 4000 euro's for mint condition french import r4's with low mileage. so be glad prices are so relatively low in your country

If you don't like interior engine noise, you want a GTL.
If you want the specific R4 sound, you want the L.
If you like hearing the car work for you whilst driving uphill, you want the L.
If you just want to get over the hill, you want the GTL.
Etcetera.
There are no unreliable R4's.
GTL's can do the job, and so do L's.
They only do it different.
I do not know which type is more available in your country, but you've made us all jealous by telling us your so called high prices...
Be glad that your environment is deluged by R4's...,you don't have a problem whatsoever.
Buy a GTL AND the L!
And send a few up north, thank you.

It's gooood to nitice that the enthousiasm of r4's also lives in the south of Europe! These cars ara verry reliable, but, because of the Dutch weather (rain, snow & salt) , also very rusty! That's a problem you don't really have, so I think the R4 is the perfect car for your country! One advise: buy a r4 rodeo (enjoy the sunshine!) with a GTL-engine (to come up-hill in scilence)!! Good luck!
Thanks for your help, i'm going to try to find a GTL, i can use it better in the Highways, as well as in the country. I already found 2 one for 850€ and another for 1100€, i have to see them.
I have a litle story for you, an experience with my first car, a R4 of course.
I had a farm in the center of Portugal and usually i went there on weekend. One day while going arround the farm in my R4 i saw a tractor stuck in sand i went there stoped my R4 next to the tractor asked if he needed help and went out of there to get some help.
Moral of the story: R4 is better then a Tractor
